Martha Shamp was born (Martha Ellen Duggar) in 1955 at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama.
She attended Pintlala School from second through ninth grades, went on to Hooper Academy in Hope Hull until graduation from that high school in 1971.
She attended the University of Alabama until 1973, transferred to Auburn University and graduated from Auburn with degree in Journalism. She enrolled in AU’s master’s program in English literature and taught as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Auburn, but did not complete the master’s.
She was born again in 1975 in Auburn from missionaries’ testimonies which she heard at the then faithful Auburn United Methodist Church.
She met her future husband at Ft. Benning, Georgia (Lt. Jerry Shamp from E. Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, later Major Jerry Shamp). After a long career in the U.S. Army he worked for both Army and Air Force as supply custodian for many years at Nichols Center at Auburn University, helping cadets who became future Army soldiers. His love for the military never wavered.
They married at Providence Presbyterian Church south of Montgomery, Alabama in 1980 and traveled to Army posts in Columbus, Georgia at Ft. Benning, Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Baumholder, Germany and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina changing locations for many years. Then they moved to Auburn, Alabama and established permanent residence in “the loveliest Village of the Plains” as Auburn is nicknamed.
During their postings in the military they had three children: Hayley, Bonnie, and son David Shamp all wonderful, wise and healthy offspring. May God bless their great spouses and families of their own.
